The Minister for Health, Magaly Gutiérrez, presented this Friday before the United Nations (UN) the National Strategic Plan for the control of tuberculosis 2023-2027, which will be executed by the ministerial entity.

The presentation is part of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly taking place in New York, United States (USA).

In this sense, Gutiérrez stated that the plan aims to access the health service, as well as provide the necessary treatments for its control, free of charge.

This, despite the blockade imposed against Venezuela by the United States, which has affected the country’s economic apparatus, as well as access to medical supplies to care for the population.

“This program maintains as a priority full access to diagnosis and effective comprehensive health services, as well as timely treatment with quality assurance that is completely free and strictly supervised, reflecting a success rate that has been increasing despite the blockade of the financial funds and that have been illegally imposed against Venezuela, which have a devastating impact by preventing and increasing the cost of access to medicines for treatments and technologies,” said Gutiérrez, quoted in Press release.

Increase testing for tuberculosis detection

In addition, this plan plans to increase tests to detect tuberculosis cases.

Among these actions is systematic screening in risk groups and vulnerable populations, as well as shortened and strictly supervised treatment.

These actions will guarantee coverage in the supply of medications to patients suffering from this disease.

“Always facing the challenges it poses to confront infectious tuberculosis, a series of measures and strategies have been implemented whose main objective is the education and training of health personnel and the population in general,” highlighted the Minister.

In this regard, Gutiérrez stressed that the health area should not become a weapon of political manipulation, as was observed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

During his participation, Gutiérrez raised his voice for the immediate cessation of sanctions in order to coordinate with different organizations such as the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) or the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) the acquisition of inputs to be able to execute the plan.
