Navarra’s Empty MIR Family Medicine Residency Positions: What This Means for the State’s Healthcare System

40% of the places MIR of Family Medicine that had been offered in Navarra have been uncovered. In total, only 16 of the 40 places for residents offered in this specialty have been awarded. In this way, the Foral Community is the one with the highest percentage of empty vacancies without adjudication in the entire State.

In the case of Navarra, after the ordinary call they were left uncovered 18 seats MIR of Family Medicine, but after the extraordinary appeal made in mid-May by the Ministry of Health, four were awarded, leaving 14 vacancies. However, after the resignations – and as detailed yesterday by the head of studies of the Family and Community Care Teaching Unit of Cuenca, Jorge Lerma – the Foral Community has been left with 16 deserted Family MIR vacancies.

The situation is worrisome taking into account the deficit of physicians -especially in Primary Care– and that last year in the first round there were only 5 empty places in Family Medicine in Navarra and after the second round only one was left without awarding.

In the rest of the State, of the 2,455 places offered in the specialty, 290 have finally remained unfilled, among those who were not elected (103) and resigned (187), which represents 11.81% of the total. Navarra would be the community with the highest percentage of unfilled places, followed by Extremadura, with 36 unfilled places (20 in Cáceres and 14 in Badajoz) of the 98 that were offered in the ordinary call, 36.73%.
