The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) of El Salvador revealed what the card for next year’s presidential elections will look like. In total there will be six candidates, which include the current president, Nayib Bukele, who is seeking re-election despite the fact that it is unconstitutional.

???? We suggest: Bukele left the presidency of El Salvador seeking re-election: who replaces him?

Through a publication on X (formerly Twitter), the president reacted to the TSE photo. Bukele, who came to power in June 2019 for the Nuevas Ideas party, is seeking re-election, despite the fact that the Salvadoran Constitution does not allow the re-election of presidents.

Last Thursday, Bukele obtained a license from Congress that allows him to run as a presidential candidate. This was approved by the 67 deputies of the ruling bloc. Since he left the presidency, it was in charge of Claudia Juana Rodríguez de Guevara, the private secretary of the Presidency, who will govern for the next six months.

Rodríguez de Guevara has worked with Bukele for more than a decade and has “degree studies in business administration” and an “accounting technician” degree. His ascension was ratified by Congress the same Thursday, but there has been no swearing-in ceremony, even though he began to govern on December 1.

With the license, Bukele “will not be able to exercise the decision-making function such as the political and administrative leadership of the state apparatus, monopoly on the use of state force” or participate in “law formation” processes.

12 deputies opposed allowing the Salvadoran president to seek re-election. Already in 2021, the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice had authorized him to do so and at that time they also presented criticism. Representative Claudia Ortiz, of the centrist Vamos party, said last week that “you cannot give a license for something unconstitutional.”

The elections will be on February 4, 2024 and Bukele seems to be the favorite, maintaining his speech about the “war” against gangs in El Salvador. According to a survey by the University Institute of Public Opinion of the Central American University (UCA), 69.9% of Salvadorans “agree” with the president running.
