New York – Russia’s permanent representative to the Security Council, Vasily Nebenzia, confirmed that Moscow warned, when the Iranian consulate in Syria was bombed, that member states would not condemn the Israeli attack.
Nebenzia stressed that the urgent meeting held by the UN Security Council regarding the retaliatory attack launched by Iran on Israel is “a display of hypocrisy and double standards.”
He said: “What we are witnessing today in the Security Council is a display of hypocrisy and double standards and is almost shameful,” stressing that “if it had been a Western mission that had been attacked, the situation would have been different.”
He added: “What happened on the night of April 14 did not come out of nowhere. The steps taken by Iran were in response to the shameful inaction of the UN Security Council, and in response to the blatant Israeli attack on Damascus, and it is not the first time that Syria has been subjected to continuous bombing by Israel.”
It is worth noting that on April 3, the United States and Britain refused to discuss a draft statement proposed by Russia in the Security Council regarding the Israeli raid on the Iranian consulate in Damascus. London and Washington indicated at the time that during the meeting there was no unity in assessments of what happened.
An urgent session of the UN Security Council will be held on Sunday regarding the retaliatory strike directed by Iran on Israeli territory.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations previously stated that if the Security Council had condemned the Israeli strike on the consulate in Damascus and brought those responsible to justice, “the need for Iran to punish the Israeli side could have been avoided.”
Yesterday evening, Saturday, Iran launched a large-scale direct attack on Israel, using dozens of drones and ballistic missiles, in response to Israel targeting the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital, Damascus, at the beginning of this month.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced, in a televised statement on Saturday, that “in response to the crime of the Zionist entity and its attack on the consulate of the Iranian embassy in Damascus, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s Air Force bombed certain targets in the territory of the Zionist entity with dozens of drones and missiles.”
Israeli media reported at dawn on Sunday that air defense systems intercepted dozens of Iranian missiles and drones over large areas in various parts of Israel.
