The streaming giant announces price increases in several countries, including France.

“As we bring more value to our subscribers, we may sometimes ask them to pay a little more.” In a letter sent to shareholders on the occasion of the release of its quarterly financial results, Netflix announces a price increase in three countries: the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. Of the four subscriptions offered, two are affected.

The “Essential” subscription, previously offered at 8.99 euros per month, increases to 10.99 euros. The latter is the cheapest ad-free subscription, with the ability to watch and download content on one device (smartphone, computer, TV) at a time.

For its part, the “Premium” subscription goes from 17.99 euros to 19.99 euros per month. It notably offers the possibility of watching content and recording it on four devices, as well as very high definition.

Successive price increases

For their part, the “Standard with ” subscription remains at 5.99 euros per month, while the “Standard” subscription (higher definition and two devices included) retains its price of 13.49 euros per month.

These price increases are part of a generalized inflation of all streaming platforms (audio or video), after a sharp increase in prices for its competitor Disney+.

For Netflix, this price increase comes two years after a previous increase, at the end of 2021. After almost a decade in France, the price of the “Premium” subscription has increased by 66%, from 11.99 euros in 2014 to 19.99 euros monthly in 2023.

In its letter to shareholders, Netflix also welcomes the financial success of another indirect price increase decided at the start of 2023: billing for sharing its account with a third party, for 5.99 euros per month.

“The level of termination remains low, beyond our expectations, and the conversion of those who use a third party’s account into paying subscribers demonstrates good retention” explains the American company.
