New Brunswick Fisherman’s $64 Million Lottery Win: The Unbelievable Story

A New Brunswick crab fisherman, who never thought he would win a big lottery prize, reportedly waited nearly a year to have his winning $64 million ticket, which was set to expire in just 19 days, verified later.

“I’ve always done it like that, and I never thought I would win big, so I left the tickets there and didn’t worry too much about it,” Merel Chiasson told the Society of the Atlantic lotteries, according to a press release issued Thursday.

For almost a year, the man from Bas-Caraquet in New Brunswick would have slept peacefully without knowing that beside him, in his bedroom dresser, lay the winning ticket for the sum of 64 million dollars from 6/ 49, drawn April 15, 2023, and until recently unclaimed.

Because the New Brunswicker had gotten into the habit of validating his tickets without a press, one month at a time, shortly before their expiration, he confided.

But this time, he was surprised to discover that he had won the sum of $64M, which he initially believed to be only $64,000, at the Pokemouche convenience store, in the eponymous town.

“There were a lot of zeros, so I wasn’t sure,” he added, specifying that his partner had realized directly that he had in his hands the famous note that was missing from the call.

The man who worked as a fisherman for 40 years before offering his services at a local fish processing plant in recent years has no plans to change, although the award will help him retire and provide financial assistance to his family, he told the lottery company.

“I don’t want anything big. It’s not going to change me, I’m still the same person,” he said, adding that he also doesn’t plan to change his habits when it comes to buying lottery tickets.
