Vienna/Graz/Innsbruck – Climate change is leading to a massive decline in the cryosphere in Austria. This term includes glaciers, snow cover, permafrost and lake ice cover. As from the first, recently published Cryosphere Monitoring Report (“KryoMon.AT”) As can be seen, 2021/22 was characterized by a particularly low snow cover, extreme retreat of glaciers, thawing permafrost soils and a short duration of lake ice cover.
