New Rules for Receipt Printing: More Choices and Environmental Impact Reduction

2023-07-23 21:00:46

From Tuesday August 1, 2023, professionals will no longer be obliged to give a receipt automatically, unless the customer requests it.

However, some customers may be concerned about their rights, especially regarding warranties for electronic equipment purchases or possible exchanges. Exceptions have been provided by the legislator to address these concerns.

End of automatic receipt printing

The new rules state that professionals can no longer automatically print a receipt, but customers still have the option of requesting one at checkout. However, merchants can now also offer an electronic receipt via email or through apps linked to the customer’s loyalty card, for a more convenient and eco-friendly shopping experience. These digital options can also allow customers to better track their purchases and spending.

But that’s not all ! Customers who do not wish to share their personal information or do not have access to digital technology can also request a paper receipt, and merchants cannot refuse this request. This ensures that all customers are treated fairly, regardless of their technology preferences or needs. Additionally, traders are encouraged to educate their customers about the environmental benefits of digital options and encourage them to use them whenever possible.

In short, with these new rules, customers have more choices and businesses can help reduce their environmental impact while offering a more modern and convenient shopping experience.

Four situations when printing receipts is always mandatory

When purchasing household appliances or telephones, where a statement relating to the legal guarantee is mandatory. In butcher shops for products that need to be weighed, for services for which the amount exceeds €25, or for services in the hotel and catering sector. For security reasons, credit card receipts must be printed in the case of canceled or unsuccessful credit card payment transactions. Some transactions performed by machines, such as toll or parking tickets, require the logical printing of a ticket.

It is important to note that the Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention has published a FAQ on the subject which allows you to understand everything about this new measure.
