New Sunday Closure Schedule Announced for Espírito Santo Supermarkets

Supermarkets across the 78 municipalities of Espírito Santo will remain closed on Sundays through November and the first half of December 2026 under a newly announced schedule, according to Portaltemponovo.

The rules extend a restrictive framework that began on March 1, 2026. Approximately 1,500 establishments initially shut their doors on Sundays for an eight-month experimental period.

That trial concludes on October 31, 2026. Negotiators established a structured calendar for the upcoming months.

Grocery stores and hypermarkets were scheduled to stay closed on Sundays from November 1 to December 19, 2026. A holiday and tourist-season exception will allow stores to open on Sundays starting December 20, 2026, through February 7, 2027.

Mandated Sunday closures are scheduled to resume on February 8, 2027. The scope of the convention applies across diverse formats within the alimentary retail sector.

Affected businesses include traditional supermarkets, hypermarkets, wholesale grocers, food wholesalers, mini-markets, and neighborhood groceries. Fruit-and-vegetable markets and food outlets located inside shopping centers are also included.

Small family-run shops operated directly by their owners operate under distinct terms. Independent bakeries and butcher shops tied to separate collective agreements also have separate rules.

Permission to open does not constitute a mandatory requirement for every store. Individual enterprises retain the choice of whether to resume Sunday operations.

No federal mandate exists to shutter supermarkets nationwide on Sundays. The restrictions are entirely regional.

Labor leaders argue the policy gives workers predictable rest and improves family routines.

Securing Sunday as a rest day was an important victory. Now, our fight is to expand rights, especially meal vouchers for retail store clerks. We want advancements that represent concrete improvements in the lives of male and female workers

Negotiations touch upon wage adjustments and professional environment enhancements. Parties also discuss the legal preservation of collective bargaining rights.

Operators have balanced operating costs and staffing schedules. Market intelligence data from Scanntech showed a 1.3% drop in food retail revenue across Espírito Santo during March and April 2026 compared to the previous year.

Official agreement conditions had not been fully formalized or confirmed by all entities at the start of November 2026. Business representatives from the commercial federation and the supermarket association noted that implementation remains conditional:
