New virus: see what the symptoms are

During the summer, it is normal for the number of cases of the virus to rise, since traveling to other cities and an unbalanced diet are the perfect scenario for new infections. Florianópolis, for example, has been facing an outbreak of diarrhea caused by the norovirus in recent days – there are, on average, 170 cases of diarrhea per day treated at the Emergency Care Units (UPA).

According to data from the Situation Room of the Epidemiological Surveillance Management, in January alone, 5,296 cases were registered in the capital of Santa Catarina. Without proper care, the same can happen in other regions of the country.

According to the infectologist and medical director of Hilab, Bernardo de Almeida, viral disease refers to any viral disease — in most cases, the condition is mild and heals on its own. Symptoms usually include fever, body aches and headache. Eventually, the patient may also have respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms. In these cases, it is not possible to clinically define the etiologic agent with precision.

Virosis can hardly become a serious condition, but this can happen, especially when there is an inadequate diagnosis – the condition may actually be a bacterial infection. “There are also situations in which the viral infection can evolve into more serious forms, such as influenza, Sars-CoV-2 or respiratory syncytial virus. Every virus can potentially cause serious infection, although it is rare. There are host conditions that predispose the severity, such as the extremes of age (newborns and the elderly), immunosuppressed people or those with comorbidities”, explains the doctor.
