NEW YORK — There’s a new twist in the Big Apple’s immigration crisis as New York City announced a lawsuit against dozens of counties.

The city filed a lawsuit against 31 counties in the state that oppose sheltering migrant asylum seekers. These areas have implemented executive orders and even lawsuits to prevent the city from sending immigrants to their communities.

Now city lawyers say this is an emergency and that they have used taxpayer money to find shelter for the undocumented.

The city is dealing with the arrival of thousands of migrants to the Big Apple who have been sent from Texas, Florida and other border states for a year.

Just days ago New York City announced a new two-year partnership with New York Interfaith Disaster Services (NYDIS) that will allow up to 50 houses of worship or religious spaces to offer shelter during night to 19 adult men at each of the locations, Mayor Eric Adams said Monday. During the day the city will offer five centers for migrants so that spaces of faith can carry out their normal activities.

This measure, part of a new effort by the city to provide housing for the more than 46,000 asylum seekers who have arrived since the immigration crisis began, will house nearly 1,000 migrants with potential for further expansion.

“No matter what religion you practice, caring for those in need is part of every spiritual tradition,” Mayor Adams said. “As we continue to address this humanitarian crisis, I am proud that through this new partnership with New York Disaster Interfaith Services, New York City’s religious community will be able to provide refuge to asylum seekers in need at places of worship throughout the five boroughs. This will not only increase the space we have by almost 1,000 beds, but it will also connect asylum seekers with local communities. New York City continues to do everything we can to address this crisis, but we need additional assistance from other partners.”
