Police arrested the suspect in the shooting in the New York subway that left 23 wounded, ten of them with bullets, on Tuesday, several US media announced on Wednesday.

“We got him,” New York Mayor Eric Adams said at a news conference announcing the arrest.

The subject, who did not resist, risks a life sentence for carrying out a terrorist-type armed attack on a public means of transport, New York Attorney General Breon Peace explained.

Police had identified African-American Frank James, as the man suspected of setting off two smoke grenades as the train approached the “36 Street” station in Brooklyn on Tuesday morning, before firing 33 shots at passengers.

The arrest was uneventful and the man will be charged in Tuesday’s shooting, New York Police Chief Keechant Sewell said.

According to images on social media, a man resembling James, dressed in dark clothing and a black cap, was put into a police car with no apparent resistance.

The authorities, who had asked for citizen cooperation, offered a $50,000 reward for any information in the arrest of this large man who may suffer from mental problems.

His credit card and the keys to the van he had rented were found at the scene of the attack.

The mayor of New York had asked citizens hours before to be “vigilant”, but said there is no evidence that the shooter had an accomplice: “It seems that he acted alone,” he said.

James had posted several videos on YouTube in which he appears giving long, and sometimes aggressive, political harangues and criticisms of Adams. His page had been closed on Wednesday for “violating the guidelines” of YouTube.

James’s sister, Catherine James Robinson, told The New York Times that she was “shocked” to see her brother being considered the suspect.
