U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy unveiled a new surface movement radar at Newark Liberty International Airport on Tuesday, introducing advanced technology designed to help air traffic controllers better track planes and vehicles moving around runways in all weather conditions. The federal government says the installation will improve overall runway safety and prevent potential collisions during low-visibility operations.
Operating as part of the Trump administration’s broader $12.5 billion modernization project, the deployment at Newark is intended to give aviation professionals a clearer view of the tarmac when visibility drops. The rollout coincides with the implementation of high-tech flight management software, addressing critical infrastructure needs in heavily congested regional corridors.
“It allows controllers on a dark night, or controllers in bad weather if they can’t see out of the tower and see what’s happening on the tarmac, they can actually use this radar to see on the screens where everything is at, airplanes, vehicles, and again, it keeps the American traveling public safer,” Duffy said during the unveiling.
Enhancing Safety Across New York-Area Hubs
This past March, LaGuardia Airport was closed for hours after an Air Canada regional plane collided with a Port Authority vehicle, resulting in the deaths of two pilots. Federal officials point to that tragedy as an explicit example of the type of accident the updated technology is meant to prevent.
New York-area airports handle more than 140 million passengers annually, making regional efficiency and safety a paramount concern for transit authorities. Port Authority Executive Director Kathryn Garcia emphasized the daily commuter focus during Tuesday’s announcement. “We know that our customers don’t care why they are delayed or whose fault it really was, it only matters when it works well for them,” Garcia said.
With this installation, Newark Liberty International Airport becomes the fifth airport in the nation to receive the new surface movement radar technology. Federal aviation authorities plan to roll out additional systems at major U.S. hubs—including LaGuardia and JFK—over the next year, with the entire modernization initiative scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.
Staffing Realities and Passenger Perspective
Federal officials stressed that the new radar systems are designed to assist air traffic controllers rather than replace them. The Federal Aviation Administration reports that 4,000 new controllers have been hired nationwide, though many remain in active training programs. Newark has frequently borne the brunt of regional staffing shortages, making technological aids crucial for day-to-day operations.

Travelers navigating the New Jersey hub expressed cautious optimism regarding the infrastructure upgrade. “As long as we keep safety intact and the implementation smooth, I’m all for that,” said flier Jennifer Hobbs.
As the rollout continues across the nation’s busiest travel corridors, federal and local agencies will monitor the integration of the new radar systems alongside ongoing controller training programs. Aviation authorities intend to maintain installation schedules through the decade’s end to ensure comprehensive surface surveillance nationwide.
