NHL Stars to Appear on ‘The Price Is Right Tonight

Four National Hockey League players—Edmonton Oilers defenseman Jake Walman, New York Islanders alternate captain Matthew Schaefer, Washington Capitals winger Tom Wilson, and Seattle Kraken defenseman Brandon Montour—are stepping off the ice and onto the television stage to film an NHL-themed episode of The Price Is Right Tonight, hosted by Howie Mandel.

Walman Remains Available for Tuesday Game

  • Roster Availability: Walman’s participation during a non-game window keeps Edmonton’s lineup intact ahead of their Tuesday matchup against the Minnesota Wild.
  • Wilson, Schaefer, Montour and Walman join The Price is Right Tonight on Citytv and Citytv+.

From the Ice to Plinko Boards

The special primetime spin-off episode is scheduled to air Monday at 8 p.m. ET on Citytv and will stream concurrently on Citytv+. Alongside the four active NHL stars, Toronto Maple Leafs alumnus Wendel Clark joins the lineup on stage.

While the broadcast reaches television screens early in the week, the actual taping occurred back in June during the players’ offseason downtime. The scheduling worked out favorably for Walman, whose Oilers enter Monday with a rest day before hosting Minnesota on Tuesday with a 5-0-1 record as the league’s only team lacking a regulation loss.

NHL Players Previously Appeared on Pricing Games

Hockey players appearing on daytime or primetime television pricing games is not an entirely unprecedented crossover. Back in 2010, Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin made an appearance on the American version of the program alongside Jeremy Roenick, with Drew Carey hosting the broadcast.

The concept for the current Canadian primetime edition originated from Steve Mayer, the NHL’s President of Content and Events, who approached executive producer Claire Adams several months prior to production.

Player Perspectives on the Crossover

For Matthew Schaefer, the reigning Calder Trophy winner as NHL rookie of the year, participating in the show marked a crossover from a routine locker room viewing habit. Whether it’s during pregame meal with all the guys, they’d always throw it on and we’d be watching, Schaefer told NHL.com, adding that his father humorously inquired whether producers might want him on stage instead. Meanwhile, Wilson cited childhood nostalgia and expressed that his family and older brother would enjoy seeing him on the program.

Jake Walman Edmonton Oilers Defenseman
Matthew Schaefer New York Islanders Defenseman
Tom Wilson Washington Capitals Forward
Brandon Montour Seattle Kraken Defenseman

Host Howie Mandel praised the athletes for bringing an elevated level of energy to the studio floor during the June tapings. With the broadcast date finally arriving, viewers will see how the physical intensity of the NHL translates to managing a showcase showdown.
