Nicholas Hoult Joins Harry Potter TV Show as Gilderoy Lockhart

Nicholas Hoult has officially signed on to play the boastful, inept author Gilderoy Lockhart in the second season of HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series. HBO confirmed the casting on August 11, marking a full-circle franchise moment for the actor after he auditioned to play Harry.

From Almost-Harry to Defense Against the Dark Arts

The casting brings Nicholas Hoult into the Wizarding World twenty-five years after he lost the role of the boy wizard to Daniel Radcliffe during the original film auditions. Reflecting on those early casting calls in a 2024 interview, the actor recalled wearing fake glasses for director Chris Columbus before trying out for Draco Malfoy as well. I gradually just auditioned for every role in Harry Potter until they were like, ‘No, none of them. Stop auditioning,’ Hoult recounted.

Now, the X-Men and Superman franchise veteran is joining the cast of the HBO original series as Professor Gilderoy Lockhart, the dazzling celebrity author who accepts the jinxed Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher position during Harry’s second year at Hogwarts. In the books, Lockhart is famous for bestselling autobiographical accounts of vanquishing dark creatures—including allegedly fighting off werewolves and banshees and winning Witch Weekly’s Most-Charming-Smile Award five times—before Harry and Ron expose him as a fraud who wiped the memories of actual competent wizards.

Production Timeline and the Expanding Hogwarts Ensemble

While the first season of the multi-season adaptation is scheduled to debut on December 25, 2026, covering J.K. Rowling’s first novel, Hoult’s appearance is slated for the second season, which will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Filming for that sophomore season is due to begin this fall.

HBO announced the casting on social media with a nod to the character’s inflated ego, quoting from his fictional autobiography:

“Magical me indeed. Now, how many autographs would you like? Nicholas Hoult has been cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in season two of the new HBO original Harry Potter series.”

Hoult joins an expansive ensemble cast featuring newcomers and veteran actors alike. The central trio is led by Dominic McLaughlin, alongside Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. They are joined by John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

Stepping Into Kenneth Branagh’s Footsteps

Hoult takes on a role previously defined on film by Sir Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 movie adaptation. The character’s trajectory spans from his fraudulent glory days at Hogwarts to his eventual fate as an amnesiac patient in the permanent spell damage wing at St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, a storyline readers last saw in Order of the Phoenix.
