In the collective bargaining dispute at Deutsche Post, the ver.di trade union has called for nationwide strikes. Employees in mail and parcel centers are to stop working throughout the day.
The collective bargaining dispute between ver.di and Deutsche Post is entering the next round: After collective bargaining talks failed, the union called on all employees in letter and parcel centers nationwide to go on strike. Since yesterday at 5:00 p.m. and today, the Post employees are supposed to stop working all day.
The reason is the collective bargaining that also failed in the second round. “The employees in the companies will now give a clear answer and emphasize their demands with strikes,” announced ver.di negotiation manager Andrea Kocsis.
Refusal is a “Provocation”
The union is demanding 15 percent more wages for around 160,000 employees in Germany over a period of twelve months. “The fact that employers refuse to compensate for real wage losses is a provocation in view of the billions in profits of the group. The employees in the companies will now give a clear answer to this and emphasize their demands with strikes,” emphasized Kocsis.
“Realistic” salary demand
Deutsche Post had repeatedly dismissed the salary claim as “unrealistic”. “In the forthcoming collective bargaining negotiations, it will be important that we find the balance between wage increases for our employees and economic viability for the company,” said a spokesman before the start of the negotiations.
Deutsche Post DHL is highly profitable. However, the focus of the business activity is abroad. Tariff talks are set to resume on February 8th. Until then, further strikes could follow.
