“Of course there can’t be any Russian flags during the Paris games,” Macron told French sports daily L’Equipe (Thursday edition). “I think there is a consensus on this issue because Russia is not a welcome country at a time when it is committing war crimes and deporting children.”
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) must decide what status Russian athletes should be given and “this issue should not be politicized,” Macron added. However, Ukraine should be included in these considerations. Ukraine has threatened to boycott the games if athletes from Russia and Belarus compete for their countries.
