North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles early Monday, South Korea’s military said, its second launch in two days and comes a day after the United States and South Korea conducted joint air exercises.

“Our military detected two short-range ballistic missiles launched from Seokchon, South Pyongan Province,” the Seoul Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

For its part, the Japanese Prime Minister’s office said Monday morning via Twitter that “North Korea launched what is suspected to be a ballistic missile.”

The Japan Coast Guard said shortly after that the projectile “appears to have already landed,” without providing further details.

In a related context, the South Korean Foreign Ministry said on Monday that Seoul imposed new sanctions on four individuals and five entities linked to North Korean weapons programs.

North Korea confirmed Sunday that it had launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Saturday, in a warning to Washington and Seoul, stressing that the success of this “surprising” test was evidence of its “capabilities to launch a lethal nuclear counter-attack.”

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, condemned the missile test conducted by North Korea at the end of the week, and called on Pyongyang to stop its “provocative actions,” according to what his spokesman announced Sunday.

“The Secretary-General strongly condemns another ICBM launch by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement Sunday.

He added that Guterres reiterated Pyongyang’s call to “immediately cease any further provocative actions.”

According to the statement, Guterres urged North Korea to “fully comply with its international obligations under all relevant Security Council resolutions, and to resume dialogue leading to sustainable peace and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”
