Pyongyang criticizes UN call for denuclearization
The North Korean regime believes that the “complete denuclearization” of North Korea is “an attack on its sovereignty”.
North Korea slammed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday, calling “dangerous words” his call for the country’s denuclearization during a visit to Seoul.
On a two-day visit to the South Korean capital, Antonio Guterres affirmed on Friday his “clear commitment” to the denuclearization of North Korea, which he set up as a “fundamental objective to bring peace, security and stability to the whole region”.
On Sunday, North Korea’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Son-gyong accused the UN chief of showing “sympathy” to hostile US policies.
“An attack on sovereignty”
“I can only express my deep regret for the remarks of the UN Secretary-General, which are sorely lacking in impartiality and fairness,” he said in a statement taken up by the official agency. KCNA. He stressed that the “complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization” of North Korea was “an attack on the sovereignty of the DPRK”.
Washington and Seoul have repeatedly warned in recent months that North Korea is preparing for another nuclear test, which would be the seventh in its history. “We advise Secretary General Guterres to be careful when he utters such dangerous words and actions,” he said, comparing his remarks to “gasoline poured on flames”.
Kim Jong-un’s regime conducted a record series of weapons tests this year, including an intercontinental ballistic missile, for the first time since 2017. In July, Kim Jong-un assured his country was “ready to mobilize » its nuclear deterrent in the event of a military conflict with the United States or South Korea.
