(Jakarta = Yonhap News) Correspondent Park Ui-rae = The Australian New South Wales (NSW) state government has been controversial for canceling plans to light an opera house to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III of England, claiming to save electricity. Australia has the King of England as its constitutional head of state.

According to The Daily Diary on the 7th (local time), Australia turned on purple lights symbolizing the British royal family in major buildings to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III. But Australia’s most famous symbol, the Opera House, was an exception.

The Opera House is famous for itself, but it is also famous for decorating the sail-shaped white exterior of the building with various lights on important days. At the time of Queen Elizabeth II’s death last year, black lights were turned on on the exterior wall and a picture of her queen was displayed.

The NSW government said it canceled plans to light the Opera House to conserve electricity, saying it “believes the balance has been struck in meeting the expectations of the community while keeping the public costs in mind”.

Instead, Admiralty House, the official residence of the Governor-General of Australia in Sydney, and the Cape Bowling Green Lighthouse at the National Maritime Museum of Australia were lit up in purple.

The Theostrailian said it is estimated to have saved between 80,000 and 100,000 Australian dollars (about 71.2 million to 89 million won) by canceling the opera house lighting event.

However, some point out that the NSW government is acting to reduce the meaning of this coronation as the government changed to the Labor Party supporting the republican system in the recent general election.

Libertarian Senator Jane Hume criticized the move as “very inappropriate,” saying, “If saving electricity is so important, there are many other ways.”

The opera house was not lit, but events were held in other areas to mark the coronation ceremony held in 70 years. Parliament House and the Australian War Memorial were decorated with purple lighting, and other state governments also lit up major buildings with purple lighting.

Also on this day, at Parliament House, Australian soldiers fired 21 salutes and the Australian Air Force conducted an additional flight.
