Obstruction in the murder case 2024-03-16 13:22:56

Dimitris Georgakopoulos speaks of obstruction, noting that they expect the appropriate initiatives to be taken in the coming days for the progress and completion of the trial that began in January 2023.

“While we are very pleased with the fact that the Court has been investigating the truth in depth all this time, it is unfortunate that, 6 months after the expiry of the 18-month temporary detention of the accusedno decision has yet been issued, and it is an unpleasant surprise that the court tolerates delays on the part of the defense.

Notably, we are approaching them 100 meetings in the audience, in a trial that has lasted more than a year (started on January 9, 2023), with the defendant’s pretrial detention having already expired six months ago (on September 30, 2023), by which time the warrant should have already been issued decision. It is evident that the fact that the accused is being held temporarily for another case has created a slackness in the need for the trial to be conducted and completed in a timely manner.

On the one hand, we got to the point where an adjournment was granted because defense counsel wanted to attend in a football match(!), and in fact on a day (21/2/2024) that he had agreed to be present in the audience, in order to continue his preaching.

On the other hand, today came the decision of the President of the Court to “freeze” for the next session the summoning of the main defense counsel, Mr. Kougia (who cited medical reasons why he could not appear on 3/13 and 3/14, and we wish him a speedy recovery and a good return), and that the marriage of his partner and also a defense attorney can be started in earnest.

It was the President herself who, at the hearing on 2/21/2024, when Mr. Kougias chose to attend a football match instead of continuing his shopping, had rejected the corresponding proposal/request of class support for his partner to buy, stating that it is impossible for the observance of the practices, in the middle of the purchase of one advocate, to buy another advocate. Unfortunately, (and) that trial had passed without action, and finally Mr. Kouya’s partner was married today, without it being clear to us what changed since 21.2.24 when we requested it.

We strongly protested to the Court about the obstruction found and we expect in the coming days that the appropriate initiatives will be taken for the progress and completion of the trial.”
