Oscar drama “The Queen” with Helen Mirren kicks off on ORF 2, theme day on September 9th on ORF III

Vienna (OTS) September 8, 2023 will mark the first anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s death. The ORF will be devoting a TV feature to this occasion from September 6th.

ORF 2 will kick things off on Wednesday, September 6th, with Stephen Frear’s award-winning drama “The Queen” (11:55 p.m.) with Helen Mirren, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of the British monarch. ORF III will broadcast a da capo of the film on Friday, September 8th at 11:40 p.m. On Thursday, September 7th, the former British ambassador to Austria Leigh Turner will also be a guest on ORF 2 in the ORF night talk “Stöckl” (11:05 p.m.). The next day, on Friday, September 8th, ORF nobility expert Marion Nachtwey recalled the first anniversary of the Queen’s death in “Guten Morgen Österreich” (6.30 a.m.) and “Studio 2” (5.30 p.m.). “Aktuell nach eins” will also have a focus at 1.20 p.m. in the Royals section and is planning a live discussion with the nobility expert Ansgar Gersmann, among other things.

The ORF-III theme day on Saturday, September 9th, which features nine programs, starts at 3:15 p.m. with the two-part documentary “Royal Wife” (“The Luck of Becoming a Windsor” and at 4:00 p.m. “Of the Burden, to be a Windsor”). ORF III then highlights the “Royals and the Paparazzi” (4:50 p.m.) and “Trouble in Buckingham Palace – The Queen and the dear family” (5:40 p.m.). The ORF III focus continues with the productions “Charles and Camilla – The Woman at His Side” (6.30 p.m.) and “The Queen – The Life of a Queen” (7.20 p.m.) about the career of the British regent. In the main evening, the ORF-III bar “zeit.geschichte” presents the new BBC documentary “Queen Elizabeth II – A Life for England” (8:15 p.m.). In exclusive interviews, the Queen’s children talk about life with England’s longest reigning queen. Companions, heads of state and the heir to the throne, King Charles III, remember a monarch who was perseverance in wars, crises and in the face of disasters. Afterwards, the production “The Royals remember Prince Philip” (9.50 p.m.) brings together prominent members of the British royal family in memory of Prince Philip. Filming began while the prince husband was still alive, and after his death in 2021, the interviews continued with a new plot. Thanks to access to the Queen’s private film archive, the film presents previously unseen material from Philip’s eventful life
The “zeit.geschichte” evening concludes with a documentary about another popular member of the Royal Family: “Queen Mum – Queen. Mother. Legend” (10:55 p.m.). At over 100 years old, it was considered a royal legend even during its lifetime. For 16 years, Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon sat at the side of her husband, King George VI, on the British throne and helped him carry the burden of the crown. The film makes it clear why people loved her so much and how great her influence was.
