Optimal Ray Tracing Settings for Alan Wake 2: A Technical Analysis by Digital Foundry

2023-11-05 14:01:05
Digital Foundry has already conducted a technical analysis of Alan Wake 2, but experts devoted a new video to the implementation of ray tracing on PC, calling it “a new level.” Let us remind you that high system requirements are partly due to mesh shader technology. It is noteworthy that the experts shared the optimal settings in their opinion, which will help maintain a good frame rate and a beautiful picture with tracing enabled on the RTX 3080 and RTX 4070 video cards. Direct lighting and ray reconstruction must be turned on, and indirect lighting and transparency should be set to low settings (in case RTX 4070) or disable it completely. In terms of general settings, it is recommended to leave texture filtering at a high value, and leave shadows and reflections in space high only if the PC is good. The quality of lighting, fog, relief, LOD detail, shadow filtering should be set to medium values, and the optimal choice for low settings would be post-processing and volumetric lighting. You also need to enable SSAO. Digital Foundry noticed an interesting detail. Horror does not use the full range of ray tracing, and there are certain problems with path tracing, such as the lack of indirect shadows in some places. Apparently, Remedy Entertainment is also using a combination of rasterization and path tracing – this helps the game run much more efficiently. And one of the few disadvantages was the radius of the appearance of shadows, which can form right during movement and distract attention. Alan Wake 2 is available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. Earlier, Sam Lake said that one of the best moments might have been cut out of the game, and the author of “Gaming Mania” also got acquainted with the horror – the good plot and gameplay in the spirit of Resident Evil remakes were noted.
