On August 29, 2023, a forklift operator from Oxford Airport Technical Services was driving into a building at Logan Airport when the vehicle’s forks and mas struck the entrance overhang, causing the forklift to tip over. The operator, who was not wearing a seatbelt, fell to the ground and was fatally struck by the tipping vehicle.
A video taken on the day of the incident shows that the forklift fell in a loading area outside Terminal C, near Gate C26. The operator, a 51-year-old man from Winthrop, was working for a subcontractor and was performing maintenance work for JetBlue at the time.
According to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspectors, Oxford Airport Technical Services failed to ensure that the operator wore a seatbelt while operating the forklift, putting him at risk of rollover and crushing hazards. OSHA also found that the forklift’s forks and mas were not raised to the necessary height to clear the road surface, operators were not properly trained and certified, and damaged forklifts were not inspected before being put into service or taken out of service.
As a result of these violations, OSHA issued four serious citations against Oxford Airport Technical Services, with proposed penalties totaling $46,096.
