Overhead line meets underground cable: Wiener Netze closes 380 kV power supply ring

City Councilor Peter Hanke during the installation of heavy-duty terminations in Simmering: “A secure power supply is an important asset for Vienna as a business location.”

Vienna (OTS) There is a power cable under almost every sidewalk in Vienna. A total of 20,700 km of overhead lines and underground cables are serviced and maintained by Wiener Netze so that in the event of a power failure, customers can quickly be supplied with energy from another source. 53 kilometers of it are high-voltage cables, the highways of the power grid. And these are now being expanded:

An underground cable runs south from Simmering, a 380 kV overhead line runs north from the southeast substation on the S1. At the central cemetery, the underground cable meets the overhead line. Three terminations weighing 1,450 kg and 5 meters long are being mounted on scaffolding and the Vienna network is being connected to the Austria-wide transmission network. An impressive spectacle that requires excavators, cranes and employees with a head for heights.

Wiener Netze ensures a high quality of life and reliability as a business location

“With the ring closure of the 380 kV line, Wiener Netze is strengthening the power supply in the federal capital. This is so important because the high security of supply is an indispensable piece of the jigsaw puzzle for Vienna’s services of general interest and for the high quality of life in our city, but also an enormous asset for Vienna as a business location,” emphasizes City Councilor Peter Hanke at the construction site in Simmering.

“We are the only regional network operator who also has an underground 380 kV high-voltage network in operation,” explains Wiener Netze Managing Director Gerhard Fida: “With a total investment of around 150 million euros in the Simmering substation and the Simmering-Southeast connection, we can do it the best conditions to bring renewable electricity to Vienna and to offer the highest security of supply – also in the future!

Security of supply in Vienna above average

The current figures on the subject of security of supply show that, statistically speaking, Wiener Netze customers were only affected by a power outage for around 18 minutes per year. This is a top value internationally. The independent regulatory authority E-Control checks the annual downtimes of the individual Austrian power grids. The published comparative value (ASIDI) for the year 2021 throughout Austria is 23 minutes (failure and disruption statistics e-control.at).

Working at the highest voltage level

The first section of the 380 kV supply from the Wien-Südost substation to the north is already complete and designed as an overhead line. The lines were routed over 14 power poles over a length of 3.6 kilometers.

In the second 4.5-kilometer section, around 13.5 kilometers of underground cable were laid from the end of the overhead line near the central cemetery to the Simmering substation over the past 12 months. A total of 600 tons of cable (one meter of cable weighs 45 kilograms) was installed in 6 construction phases and connected with 15 sleeves.

Overhead line meets underground cable

Sections 1 and 2 are now connected to one another: Complex installations are required for the connection between the underground cable and the overhead line. 5 meter long and 1,450 kg heavy silicone components, the so-called end caps, are mounted on the scaffolding.

The connecting sleeves between the underground cable sections are also already being set. The last cable will be pulled to the switchgear in early July. The new switchgear (substation) in Simmering will be checked for the first time in autumn 2023. After the cable has also been checked and finally accepted, the newly laid 380kV connection is expected to be put into operation at the end of 2023.
