Paddy Comyn Says The Toyota RAV4 PHEV Is The Best Choice For Retirement

In a recent advice column for The Journal, Paddy Comyn, head of automotive content and communications at DoneDeal Cars, answers a query from a retiring reader stepping out of a long-term company car and weighing a €50,000 budget for a used plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.

Evaluating the €50,000 Retirement Vehicle Budget

The reader, who has maintained a clean driving record as a named driver on their wife’s insurance policy, intends to install a home charger and utilizes existing domestic solar panels. Responding to the inquiry, Comyn identifies the Toyota RAV4 PHEV as one of the best plug-in hybrid models available on the market.

According to the column, a budget of €50,000 secures a 2025 RAV4 PHEV with low mileage from a main Toyota dealer. Comyn notes that while these vehicles can be challenging to locate, 2024 models also fall comfortably within the specified price range on DoneDeal Cars, and advises that higher mileage should not deter buyers.

Alternative Hybrid and Electric Shortlist Options

Alongside the Toyota model, Comyn outlines two alternative vehicles for the retiring driver’s consideration. A 2025 or 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan PHEV represents a viable option within the €50,000 parameter, offering a larger battery capacity, improved EV-only range, and an updated interior layout.

The Volvo XC60 PHEV is also noted as a refined and safe alternative, though buyers must look back to a 2024 model year to match the financial constraint. Comyn adds that if the driver does not anticipate accumulating high mileage in retirement, an EV could be a good option.

Vehicle Model Target Year Range Powertrain Type Estimated Budget Fit
Toyota RAV4 2024–2025 Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) €50,000 (Low Mileage)
Volkswagen Tiguan 2025–2026 Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) €50,000 (Near-New)
Volvo XC60 2024 Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) €50,000 (Used Market)

Comyn concludes his weekly Car Clinic assessment by ranking the Toyota RAV4 PHEV as his primary recommendation from the evaluated shortlist.
