Rubelina Roger was so happy with her son’s bachelor’s degree that she did not hesitate to prepare a treat for him to share with his family and friends that important achievement that came to his life at the age of 18, after so much effort.
The ceremony was on the afternoon of Saturday, December 17, in the auditorium of the University of Cartagena, in Zaragocilla, and Rubelina did not change for anyone: Francois Ramos Roger was already a bachelor. The young man’s mother bought him a bottle of whiskey and a case of beer for him to spend the night at home, in Yáñez alley in the Ricaurte sector, in the populous Olaya Herrera.
The liquor remained untasted and the celebration never took place. Francois was assassinated just a few hours after receiving his degree, a few meters from his home, after receiving a mysterious message on his WhatsApp.
The young man, also noted for playing soccer, was shot by a hit man while he was shopping at a corner store on the same street where he lived.
At 8 o’clock at night, says Rubelina, Francois returned and immediately put away the motorcycle that his mother had given him just a few months ago.
Shortly after he started chatting on his cell phone and so he walked to the store. As soon as he entered, a man with coins in his hands to make believe that he was also a customer approached him from behind and shot him point blank without saying a word.
It was 8:30 pm when Rubelina, at her house, heard the shots. “Right away I yelled ‘Franco, Franco, what’s going on.’ I thought it was a fight, but when I went to the store I saw him lying covered in blood at the door of the store. I raised his head and spoke to him,” says the young man’s mother.
With Roger there are already 22 homicides in Cartagena and its corregimientos so far in December, 12 of those cases in hit men.
Everything indicates that Francois was being followed. The gunman who killed him was seen hanging around the sector hours before on a motorcycle as a grill man. As soon as he saw that his victim was going to the store, he went behind him.
After committing the crime, the hitman ran around the corner and fled on the motorcycle with his accomplice, taking with him the dreams of a young man who was beginning to live and of a mother who gave everything for her son.
