Protesters gathered in Paris on Saturday, November 7, 2026, for the fourth weekend of social mobilization against the rising cost of living. While an intersyndical march proceeded between the Place de la République and the Place de la Nation, a separate coordination of “Gilets jaunes” maintained a planned protest at the Place de la Concorde, despite an official ban by the police prefecture.
Security Disruption and Metro Closures
The demonstration took place under heavy security, with approximately 70,000 police and gendarmes deployed across France, according to the Ministry of the Interior. Additional stations, including Oberkampf, Richard Lenoir, Saint Ambroise, Voltaire, Charonne, Rue des Boulets, Les Halles, and Châtelet, were closed to the public starting at 10:00 a.m. to manage the flow of demonstrators.
Divergent Strategies Among Protest Groups
The movement remained split regarding its tactical approach. The intersyndical group, including regional unions such as the CGT, FO, FSU, Solidaires, and CFDT, alongside youth organizations like the Union étudiante, FAGE, UNEF, and USL, followed the route validated by the prefecture. In contrast, the coordination of the Gilets jaunes, represented by Benjamin Ball, insisted on occupying the symbolic site near the National Assembly.
National Strike Precedes Upcoming Social Conference
This atmosphere of social unrest follows the national strike on November 5, which gathered between 575,000 and 1.6 million people nationwide, according to the Ministry of the Interior and the CGT respectively. In Paris alone, attendance figures for that day were estimated between 80,000 and 350,000.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has sought to address the situation, writing to social partners on Friday to express that he “entend” the expectations regarding salaries and purchasing power. He is set to convene a social conference at Matignon on Monday, November 9, to discuss these issues with unions and employers. However, the government faces a precarious legislative environment, as the National Assembly rejected the revenue portion of the 2027 budget on November 4, an unprecedented event under the Fifth Republic. Potential government responses, such as the use of Article 49.3 or executive ordinances, remain on the table, carrying the risk of a motion of censure.

Upcoming Industrial Action in Education
The upcoming Tuesday mobilization is intended to advocate for the youth and personnel within the education and research sectors.
