Patrícia Palhares Addresses Controversy Over João Palhinha’s Son’s Cake

Patrícia Palhares has issued a clarification following public controversy surrounding her son’s fourth birthday celebration.

The dispute centers on a football-themed cake that featured several professional players but notably omitted the child’s father, João Palhinha.

The controversy emerged after the boy, João Maria, celebrated his birthday with two separate parties—one organized by his father and another by his mother. While the football theme was consistent across both, the specific imagery on the cake provided by Palhares became a point of contention for observers and media commentators.

In a statement sent to a morning program on TVI, Patrícia Palhares explained that the cake was intended to feature the child’s favorite players. She emphasized that the omission of the father was not an act of exclusion, but rather a reflection of how a young child perceives a parent.

“João Maria loves football and had a cake with his favorite players. For my son, for our son, the father is simply the father, whom he adores. He does not see him as a public figure, but as any child sees their father,” Palhares stated. She noted that the child views his father through a personal lens rather than a celebrity status.

Palhares further detailed that the cake included a digital montage to satisfy the child’s specific wish to be pictured with Cristiano Ronaldo. She explained that the family had previously attempted to facilitate a real meeting between the boy and the star during a national team match, but were unsuccessful.

“Because of this, I made a montage in which João Maria appeared alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. The father saw it and saw the happiness of the son when he showed him the image, enthusiastic about having a photograph with Cristiano Ronaldo,” Palhares said. She concluded by stating the gesture was intended solely to bring happiness to her son during his birthday.

The incident was a subject of discussion on the program Passadeira Vermelha on November 4, where commentators weighed in on the social implications of the cake’s design.

Psychologist Filipa Torrinha Nunes expressed reservations regarding the decision to use the child’s birthday in a way that could trigger public debate. While acknowledging that family contexts vary, she suggested that including the father’s image alongside the other players might have been a more balanced approach for a four-year-old.

Other commentators, including Zulmira Garrido, noted the close relationship between the extended family and the child, though they suggested that more “civilized” arrangements might involve both parents participating in a joint celebration.

João Palhinha and Patrícia Palhares are parents to two children, João Maria and Francisco. The couple separated approximately two years ago during Palhares’ second pregnancy, a rupture that was subsequently confirmed by the footballer via an official press statement.

The debate regarding celebrity family dynamics was featured on recent television programming.

The situation is of public interest as the family manages their lives after separating and handles their children's milestones in the public eye.
