Philippe Gilbert’s Legal Battle: The High Stakes and Verdicts

2023-12-13 07:04:02

The former cycling world champion and winner of Liège-Bastogne-Liège (2011), Philippe Gilbert, claimed the astronomical sum of €450,000 from two people who were traveling in a BMW type car in Theux and with whom he was beaten on the road in 2016. A fracture in the phalanx of a finger on his left hand forced him to give up certain races, including that of Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2016 and the Flèche wallonne, and which had had a negative impact on his career according to him. That day, he was accompanied by Loïc Vliegen, another professional runner.

The court has delivered its verdicts in this case. The driver was found guilty of maliciously obstructing traffic and assault. Philippe Gilbert is guilty of having possessed pepper spray, a weapon prohibited in Belgium. The two cyclists were also found guilty of assault and battery. For the three protagonists, it is a simple declaration of guilt.

Instead of the 450,000 euros claimed, Philippe Gilbert will ultimately only be compensated up to… €500. (The cyclist is compensated to the tune of a provisional euro.)
