In his talk “Physical activity and healthy lifestyle“, he doctor Lenin Tlamatini Barajas Pinedaprofessor and researcher at the Faculty of Education Sciences from University of Colimapresented the results of the intervention that he carried out for 4 months with retirees and pensioners of this House of Studies.

The intervention consisted of physical activities such as walks, cachiball, a flexibility workshop, and water activities at least 3 times a week, lasting 90 minutes each, for 11 sessions.

Among the results of this intervention, the doctor Lenin highlighted that the parameters that obtained improvement were the physical ones, since the UdeC retirees ended up with greater flexibility, greater physical condition when walking and also reduced the risk of falls.

In the talk, given at the House of Retirees and Pensioners of the UdeCLenin presented the difference between activity y physical exercise. The first, she said, is related to any activity that exceeds the basal energy expendituresuch as dancing and housework. The second is one that, in addition to generating energy expenditure, has a programmed objective, for example, the yoga o flexibility exercises the one of weight lifting with the advice of a professional.

According to the World Health Organizationcommented Lenin’s Tlamatinithe recommendations for older adults are perform aerobic physical activity moderate-intensity at least 150 and 300 minutes per week or vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity at least 75 and 150 minutes per week; “It is better to do little than nothing.”

An important topic that Dr. Lenin touched on was how to define the intensity of the heart rate, especially to do moderate or vigorous exercise without affecting the health of the organism. For this he gave a formula: subtract the person’s age from 220. That number determines the maximum heart rate of the heart. If this number is reached, he warned, “the best thing to do is to start lowering our heart rate.”

In addition, to determine if the activity that is being carried out is moderate or vigorous, it is enough to multiply the result of the previous formula by 0.6 and the result would be for a moderate activity. To know if the activity es vigorous, you just have to multiply that same number by 0.8; “The ideal, however, is to stay between these 2 results. To find out if we are between those numbers, the ideal is to palpate, that is, stop the activity and count the beats for one minute.

Finally, he said, it is important that these actions be carried out because generally research they stay on paper; “It is a great success that the popular science go down to the population interested in the physical activity so that their knowledge is not only theoretical, but real; Thus, they will be able to verify the positive effects that said activity brought to their health and with it make better decisions accompanied by physical educators”.

This talk was held as part of the 40 years of scientific investigation in the University of Colimaits impact on the universal knowledgein the formation of scientific community and in the relevance for the social transformation. It is also part of the cycle of talks: “My life with science.”
