Pierrakakis for March 25: “A milestone with an international scope” 2024-03-26 07:45:43

In the same message, Mr. Pierrakakis updates the benefits of the revolution of 1821 in our days and adapts the content of modern “revolutions” to the modern challenges that are carried out by different means, but always with one basic stake, freedom.

“The revolutions of our time are called to respond to new challenges and are carried out through different means. However, their stake remains one – and that is freedom,” notes the Minister of Education.

The message of Mr. Pierrakakis is as follows:

“Dear students, dear students, Dear and dear teachers,

Today Greece celebrates 203 years since the start of the Greek Revolution. The struggle for Independence began with the Greeks’ thirst for freedom and endured thanks to the faith and devotion of the revolutionaries. Against the numerical and material superiority of the Ottoman Empire, the Greeks resisted with courage, self-sacrifice, commitment to the goal and ingenuity in the field, finally achieving the birth of the new Greek State in 1830.

Apart from self-denial and an enviable strategic spirit, a key element of the Revolution’s success was its extroversion. Even before its proclamation, the values and ideals of the Revolution had reached all of Europe. Both in the decision-making centers and in the consciousness of the citizens, the Greeks of the Diaspora created a movement of philhellenism that morally, financially and practically supported the Revolution.

On an international level, the Greek Revolution is an integral link of the great national revolutions of the 17th and 18th centuries. The Greeks were inspired by revolutions such as the American and French and at the same time inspired other peoples to throw off the yoke and claim their self-determination. That is why it is a landmark with an international scope, which contributed to the formation of the modern world.

The anniversary of March 25 is not only a memory of the past, but also a memory of the future. The revolutions of our time are called to respond to new challenges and are carried out by different means. However, their stake remains one – and that is freedom. And freedom always, in every era and in every manifestation, “requires virtue and courage”, as Andreas Kalvos wrote.

Today’s anniversary is the best occasion to commemorate the achievements of our ancestors with gratitude and respect. Their example teaches us that we Greeks can achieve a lot, with knowledge, unity, creativity and extroversion.

Our primary mission at the Ministry of Education, Religion and Sports is to acquire these supplies. And we implement this goal every day through the continuous upgrading of the educational process and through the consolidation of patriotism that stems from the saying of Dionysios Solomos that “national is what is true”.

Long live March 25th! Happy Birthday!”.
