Widzew scored 16 points in eight matches played this year. He won five of them, drew one and lost twice. “It is more of an apparent comfort. Comfort because we are climbing the ladder, and apparent because it can lull our vigilance. We demand a lot from ourselves, we strive to win matches, but we are aware that not all of our victories were convincing. However, we have done a lot to get three points, so it is important to use the moment and keep the wind in the sails as long as possible,” Myśliwiec explained.
Saturday’s confrontation between the Łódź team in Mielec promises to be very interesting, because this year Stal won only a point less than Widzew and is in 9th place in the table. Last weekend, coach Kamil Kiereś’s players lost in Kielce to Korona, which is fighting for survival (0:1), and earlier they drew without any goals with Lech Poznań and Zagłębie Lubin.
“Despite the high number of points this year, you can get the impression that the coach and Stal’s players are not satisfied with their attitude in recent matches. You certainly have to appreciate your opponent for his achievements, but we have an idea on how to use specific mechanisms against him. I expect This is going to be a demanding match, because the points scored by Stal are not accidental. You have to respect it, because your opponent certainly has the feeling that he can beat anyone, especially on his home pitch,” said the Widzew coach.
Although the team from Mielec has been having trouble scoring goals lately, Myśliwiec pointed out that its team includes the current second-leading scorer from Belarus, Ilya Shukurin.
“Szkurin is strong when he runs behind the defense line. Of course, we do not intend to retreat, but we have to know how to react to such a good striker. We have to take the ball away from Stal, because thanks to this they will have fewer opportunities to create opportunities after set pieces. The coach’s players Kieresia have good mechanisms in counter-attacks and positional attacks, but judging by the data, they create most quality situations after set pieces. We are aware that we have to be very vigilant in this aspect. On the other hand, it made it easier for me to decide on the personnel line-up,” he explained .
Widzew has a way against Stal this season. In autumn, he won a league match in Łódź 1-0, and then won the Polish Cup match played in Mielec 2-1. As Myśliwiec admitted, both tactical ideas prepared by the training staff for the Stal team turned out to be optimal. “We want to feel that we will play an even better match than the previous two matches against Stal,” he emphasized.
