Police in Kulai arrested a 23-year-old local man and woman within 24 hours after the couple allegedly rammed a motorcycle patrol unit and attempted to hit traffic officers during a traffic check early Saturday, Sept. 13, 2026, prompting an officer to fire a defensive shot at their car tyre.
The Confrontation on Jalan Kenari
The incident unfolded in the early hours of Saturday, Sept. 13, 2026, at about 1.20am. Members of the Kulai district police headquarters’ Motorcycle Patrol Unit, known locally as the URB, spotted a black Perodua Myvi moving under suspicious circumstances along Jalan Kenari in Bandar Putra, Kulai. Inside the vehicle were a local man and woman, both aged 23, according to Kulai district police chief Assistant Commissioner Tan Seng Lee.
What began as a routine crime prevention check quickly escalated into a violent confrontation. As officers moved in to inspect the car, the occupants turned aggressive and attempted to escape during a crime-prevention patrol in Kulai, Johor. The suspects rammed the URB patrol motorcycle as well as a public vehicle, a Mazda CX-5, and tried to strike an officer standing at the scene.

The impact trapped one of the URB officers when his motorcycle was struck, leaving him with minor injuries to his leg. Faced with the rapidly deteriorating situation, the officer on duty fired a single shot from his firearm aimed at the tyre of the Perodua Myvi in self-defence
, as detailed by the Kulai District Police Chief. Despite the gunshot, the suspects managed to speed away from the scene.
Forensic Recovery and the 24-Hour Manhunt
Following the escape, forensic personnel from the Johor police contingent’s Criminal Investigation Department combed the Jalan Kenari site, recovering bullet fragments and a spent cartridge casing. Seizing on the physical evidence and descriptions gathered at the scene, the Kulai CID launched a special operation to track down the fleeing pair.
The dragnet closed swiftly. Within 24 hours of the early morning clash, police located and arrested the male and female suspects in separate operations across Bandar Putra and Kluang, sweeping in between 11.30am and 8.30pm on Saturday. Alongside the suspects, authorities seized the black Perodua Myvi believed to have been used in the incident, together with a remote control device.
Investigation and Potential Charges
With both individuals in custody, investigators ran preliminary checks on their backgrounds and health status. Initial urine screening tests returned negative results for drugs, and subsequent database checks confirmed that neither suspect possessed a previous criminal record. The motive for the incident is still under investigation.
