Politico: Sunak and Macron will ‘bury the hatchet’ to signal unity to Putin

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and French President Emmanuel Macron will meet in Paris on Friday, March 10, as part of the first Anglo-French summit since 2018. As writes Politico citing sources, the leaders plan to “bury the hatchet” to signal Western unity to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Politico notes that relations between the two countries have escalated after the UK left the European Union. However, the parties hope for an improvement in political relations, in particular, in the field of regulating migration and energy. At the same time, the main motivation for restoring relations remains the unstable world situation due to a special military operation in Ukraine, sources say.

“There is a war going on in Europe, we are facing a common threat, and this is a test for our two states, which have the largest army in Europe and nuclear potential. We have a certain responsibility,” an unnamed French politician told Politico.

The first meeting between Emmanuel Macron and Rishi Sunak after the election of the British Prime Minister took place on November 7, 2022. Then the parties raised the issue of the need to control illegal migration and a number of other problems. Mainly during the meeting, the parties reaffirmed their readiness to continue military and economic support for Ukraine.
