Pope Francis Hospitalized with Double Pneumonia

Pope Francis, 88, has been admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital after being diagnosed with double pneumonia. Further tests revealed a “complex” medical situation stemming from a persistent respiratory tract infection.

“A chest X-ray demonstrated the onset of bilateral pneumonia that required further pharmacological therapy,” the Vatican announced Tuesday.

The pontiff’s ongoing treatment for an earlier-diagnosed polymicrobial infection, referred to as bronchitis, adds complexity to his recovery. Polymicrobial infections, caused by multiple microorganisms, can originate from bacteria, viruses, or fungi.

Cancellations and Continued Routine Amid Illness

Due to Pope Francis’s continued health concerns, several engagements, including Jubilee audiences scheduled for Saturday, February 22nd, have been canceled. A senior church figure will take his place, celebrating mass on Sunday morning.

Despite these cancellations, the pope has diligently maintained his nightly routine, initiated in October 2023, of telephone calls to the Holy Family church in Gaza.Father Gabriel Romanelli shared, “He was tired but had a clear voice. He asked how we were and thanked us with prayers. At the end of the call, he gave us his blessing.”

A History of Health Challenges

This hospitalization marks one of several instances where Pope Francis has sought medical attention in recent years. Last March, he was admitted to the Gemelli hospital for an initial diagnosis of bronchitis, which later evolved into pneumonia. He underwent further hospitalizations in June 2023 for health checks, followed by a brief stay in February 2024 due to what he described as “a bit of a cold.” In June 2021, the pope underwent a colon operation.

Ongoing sciatic nerve pain and a knee problem necessitate the pope’s frequent use of a wheelchair or walking stick.

Looking Ahead

While the Vatican provides updates, officials confirm that the pope is not on a ventilator and is breathing independently. Although the Holy Year, a meaningful period of pardon and forgiveness culminating in January 2025, anticipates 32 million visitors to Rome, this hospitalization casts a shadow over its festivities.

Pope Francis’s health challenges serve as a reminder of his enduring commitment despite physical limitations. His continued resilience and dedication inspire millions worldwide, offering a powerful testament to the human spirit’s ability to persevere.

Given the upcoming Holy Year and the anticipated influx of visitors, what message of hope would you send to those looking to the Vatican during this time?
