The Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico is erupting. The Mexican authorities raised the alert level on Sunday for the volcano -located between the states of Puebla, Morelos and Mexico, about 70 kilometers from Mexico City-, from “yellow phase 2 to yellow phase 3″.
The yellow color of the so-called “Volcano Alert Traffic Light” means “stay alert and prepare for a possible evacuation”, and phase 3 is established when there is intermediate to high activity.
It is the step prior to the red alarm, which involves risk of life. In that case, “you and your family should be ready to evacuate.”
The Popocatépetl, “the hill that smokes” in the Nahuatl language and popularly known as “Don Goyo”, is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because within a radius of 100 kilometers about 25 million people live.
