Heading into Monday night, Newcastle were one of the teams with the least ball in the Premier League. Against Arsenal, the Magpies had it 67% of the time in the first half. This season, Allan Saint-Maximin and his teammates had taken only one point against the members of the current “Big Six”. They just took three against the fifth. The Gunners have long occupied fourth place in 2022. But on Monday, they had everything but the face of a Champions League contender, like Thursday on the lawn of Tottenham (3-0). This is “good timing”, since it is most certainly the Europa League that they will have to settle for next season.
Arsenal have only scored twice at St James’ Park, and never created a worthy chance to send a real thrill into the stands. Dominated from the start, cornered in front of their goal, Arteta’s men spent a good part of the first act defending. And have absolutely not changed their face when they return from the locker room. Territorially dominating in the first period, Eddie Howe’s men added a little more danger after the restart, and the comeback Ben White, put under pressure by Calumn Wilson on a center from Joelinton, deceived his own goalkeeper (1- 0.55e).
