Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the United States, deaths from road accidents from preventable causes are increasing every year.

In 2015, more than 35,000 people died as a result of road accidents, an increase of 7.2% compared to 2014.

Proper driving depends primarily on the driver’s ability and experience, and on the design of the car, as the side and rear mirrors give a vision area that helps adjust driving steps and maintain safety on the roads.

But in every vehicle there are places that are difficult to reach with mirrors because of the size or shape of the mirror, or because of the size of the window or the position of the seat, and these points are what are known as blind spots.

The size of the blind spot can vary depending on the vehicle and driving position but at least one of them is usually located in the area behind the driver’s right shoulder.

This means that the driver would need to physically turn his head to look around the mirror and if he relied solely on mirrors, cameras or detectors instead of understanding the traffic around the vehicle, he could cause an accident.

Lack of awareness of blind spots is a common cause of car accidents

Failure to check blind spots properly and ignorance of their handling can lead to devastating car accidents, ranging from a side impact collision, a rear collision or a T-shaped accident.

The design of the car, which may sometimes require the development of additional mirrors to expand the area of the driver’s vision, can be a cause of blind spot accidents, but the majority of blind spot accidents are caused by human errors, most of which result from lane changes or distracted driving, such as driving under the influence of fatigue or drug use.

The scientific research site Science Direct has published the results of information collected from traffic accident reports and through a survey conducted on 429 drivers that showed that drivers who made a sudden change of lane are more likely to be involved in traffic accidents at a rate of 2.53 times than others.

Drivers who look into their side mirrors and who look out the windows before intending to change lanes are 4.61 and 3.85 times less likely to be involved in crashes, respectively.

Drivers who have received adequate training in the safe lane change maneuver while issuing their licenses are 2.06 times less likely to be involved in crashes than other drivers.

How can blind spots be checked while driving?

Any time a driver changes lanes they will need to check the vehicle’s blind spots in the left and right shoulder area, and should consider:

Adjust mirrors Use blind spot warning system Look before moving Keep car windows clean Keep a sufficient safety distance
