The 2023 NBA Draft Results: Surprise Picks, Trades, and Franchise Impact

2023-06-23 07:00:00

The 2023 NBA Draft is history! As expected, super talent Victor Wembanyama became an official member of the San Antonio Spurs. Behind it there were one or the other surprise.

There were no big surprises at the beginning of the draft: Victor Wembanyama naturally went to the Spurs in first place, as predicted by ESPN guru Adrian Wojnarowski, the Charlotte Hornets then secured forward Brandon Miller.

It also meant that the Portland Trail Blazers kept highly talented guard Scoot Henderson – and he was drawn too. What will that mean for franchise legend Damian Lillard refusing a rebuild? Totally open!

Back to back on four and five, the Thompson twins Amen and Ausar went off the board to the Rockets and Pistons, respectively. They are the first pair of brothers to make the top five since the NBA and ABA merged in 1976.

The Dallas Mavericks then caused a stir: First they traded back from tenth place to twelve in order to be able to hand over Davis Bertans’ contract to the Oklahoma City Thunder. A little later, they used the trade exception acquired for Bertans to get pick number 24 and Big Man Richaun Holmes from the Sacramento Kings. With the two picks, there was then center Dereck Lively II and wing Olivier-Maxence Prosper on top.

NBA Draft 2023 in the live ticker: the 2nd round

And with that we did it, it took almost five hours.

Why aren’t there 60 picks? That’s because the Chicago Bulls and Philadelphia 76ers each lost their second-round pick for violating league rules.

58. Pick: BUCKS – Chris Livingston (Kentucky)57. Pick: WARRIORS – Trayce Jackson-Davis (Indiana)56. Pick: GRIZZLIES – Tarik Biberovic55. Pick: PACERS – Isaiah Wong (Miami)54. Pick: KINGS – Jalen Slawson (Furman)53. Pick: TIMBERWOLVES – Jaylen Clark (UCLA)

Keyontae Johnson has a blatant story behind him: In December 2020 he collapsed on the court and was in a coma for three days. A heart condition was then diagnosed. In August 2022 he got the green light and was able to return to the court. And now he’s coming to the NBA.

52. Pick: SUNS – Toumani Camara (Dayton)51. Pick: NETS – Jalen Wilson (Kansas)50. Pick: THUNDER – Keyontae Johnson (Kansas State)49. Pick: CAVALIERS – Emoni Bates (Eastern Michigan)48. Pick: CLIPPERS – Jordan Miller (Miami)

If I haven’t miscounted, that’s already six players from the G-League.

47. Pick: PACERS – Mojave King (G-League Ignite)46. Pick: HAWKS – Seth Lundy (Penn State)45. Pick: GRIZZLIES – Gregory Jackson II (South Carolina)44. Pick: SPURS – Sidy Cissoko (G-League Ignite)43. Pick: BLAZERS – Rayan Rupert (NZ Breakers)42. Pick: WIZARDS – Tristan Vukcevic (Partizan Belgrad)41. Pick: HORNETS – Amari Bailey (UCLA)

In order to be able to pick here, the Lakers transferred around $4 million to the Pacers, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. Indiana drops to 47th.

40. Pick: LAKERS – Max Lewis (Pepperdine)39. Pick: HORNETS – Mouhamed Gueye (Washington State)38. Pick: KINGS – Jordan Walsh (Arkansas)

What Shams Charania just reports: Chris Livingston (shooting guard, Kentucky) is represented by Klutch Sports – and the local CEO Rich Paul is said to have found a team for his client in the 2nd round. So he’s said to have just called teams in the 2nd round so they wouldn’t pick him. Will they let the gun be put on their chest like that?

37. Pick: NUGGETS – Hunter Tyson (Clemson)36. Pick: MAGIC – Andre Jackson Jr. (Connecticut)35. Pick: BULLS – Julian Phillips (Tennessee)34. Pick: TIMBERWOLVES – Colby Jones (Xavier)33. Pick – SPURS – Leonard Miller (G-League Ignite)

The second round picks are being traded here as if their sell by date is in an hour. We try to keep track.

32. Pick: NUGGETS – Jalen Pickett (Penn State Nittany Lions)31. Pick: HORNETS – James Nnaji (FC Barcelona)

The 2nd round is running. We’re going to be a little shorter now.

NBA Draft 2023 in the live ticker: Kobe Brown ends the 1st round

Pick 30: LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS – Kobe Brown: The 23-year-old guard from the Missouri Tigers hit 45.5 percent of his three-pointers last season. He finishes the first round. Adam Silver thanks him and passes the baton to Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum. He will take over the 2nd draft round.

Pick 29: DENVER NUGGETS – Julian Strawther: Gonzaga’s Bulldog hits over 40 percent from outside and is a good cutter. The guard still has to step up defensively. The nuggets had recently secured the pick by trade.

Pick 28: UTAH JAZZ – Brice Sensabaugh: Did Somebody Shout Buckets? This is what happens when you draw Sensabaugh. The 19-year-old knows where the basket is and is a classic tough shot maker who also likes to go to the post office. The question is if that will work in the NBA as Sensabaugh isn’t really athletic and has already suffered two serious meniscus injuries. He would also have to learn defense.

Pick 27: CHARLOTTE HORNETS – Nick Smith Jr.: A classic combo guard whose future in the NBA arguably lies off the bench as a classic microwave scorer. Smith can create for himself, is a tough shot maker, and doesn’t have good, but at least solid, playmaking. However, Smith is still very light, which should be even more evident in the NBA. In addition, the guard has the tendency to overrev.

Pick 26: INDIANA PACERS – Ben Sheppard: The guard from Belmont can really score, last season including 41 points. In addition, he can do something with the ball and is at least not completely helpless defensively, even if he has to physically pack on it.

Pick 25: DETROIT PISTONS – Marcus Sasser: The senior from the Houston Cougars averaged almost 17 points last year. Actually a pick by the Memphis Grizzlies, but the pick then went to the Boston Celtics – and they just traded it to the Pistons. Boston gets pick 31 for it. It’s now clear what sweetened the trade six places back for the Celts. There are two second-round picks.

Olivier-Maxence Prosper

NBA Draft 2023 in the live ticker: Mavericks’ next trade

Pick 24: DALLAS MAVERICKS – Olivier-Maxence Prosper: That would have been a pick by the Sacramento Kings, but they’re picking for the Mavs. Dallas used the trade exception mentioned below to pry the pick away from the Kings – in a package with Richaun Holmes. He dropped out of the Kings rotation last season, makes $12M in 2023-24 and has a $12.9M player option for 24-25.

And what kind of guy is Prosper? The 20-year-old guard from Marquette has recently made a meteoric rise in the draft process. He impresses with good footwork and solid defense.

Trade! The Dallas Mavericks strike again!

Pick 23: PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS – Kris Murray: As a junior at Iowa, the twin of Sacramento’s Keegan Murray just averaged over 20 points. Not an extremely good shot creator, but a solid forward for the Blazers.

Pick 22: BROOKLYN NETS – Dariq Whitehead: The 18-year-old has been struggling with a foot injury – the question is whether he will ever be able to reach his high school level again. In this respect, a risky pick for the Nets, but also with a lot of upside: Before his injury, Whitehead was an elite shotmaker, and the forward is actually a strong athlete. Actually.

Pick 21: BROOKLYN NETS – Noah Clowney: Alamaba’s freshman forward is a center/forward. As one of the younger players in the draft, he still lacks the power, 55 percent of the free throw line is not a revelation and leaves doubts as to whether the Big can really play as a four to widen the field.

Pick 20: HOUSTON ROCKETS – Cam Whitmore: We’ve had to wait a long time for this name. Whitmore is said not to have had particularly good workouts and interviews, and he was temporarily absent last season with an injury. But the forward is incredibly physical and a great athlete. A high upside pick for the Rockets.

Pick 19: GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS – Brandin Podziemski: The dubs need someone who can help directly. “BP” has almost 20 points a game at Santa Clara – the left-hander is a great shot. But on the defensive you will have to hide the 19-year-old. “Yesterday I was asked who I would like to play against. I said ‘Steph’ – now we play together.”

Pick 18: MIAMI HEAT – Jaime Jaquez Jr.: You always have to look very closely at the Heat, even if they are known to be even stronger among the undrafted players. Pat Riley and Co. grab the UCLA forward this time. Jaquez Jr. is already 22, very smart, just a good basketball player. That fits! And yet it could be difficult for him to stay in the NBA. The athletic deficits could be too great and the throw is not safe either.

NBA Draft 2023 in the live ticker: Gradey Dick goes to the Raptors

Pick 17: LOS ANGELES LAKERS – Jalen Hood-Schifino: A guard from Indiana for the Lakers. On the one hand, the throw is a bit wild, on the other hand, Hood-Schifino doesn’t really close well on the ring either. But with his size, he can play on the wing or directly as a one, plus his good fundamentals on defense. His pull-up game is okay, but is that enough for defenses to respect him?

Pick 16: UTAH JAZZ – Keyonte George: A guard from Baylor for the Jazz. George is a scorer: stepbacks, pull-ups, catch-and-shoot – the 19-year-old has it all in his arsenal. The question is whether he can show that at a higher level.

Pick 15: ATLANTA HAWKS – Kobe Bufkin: One of the best players left on the board can relieve Trae Young at the Hawks as a ball handler. The 19-year-old is the definition of solid and should go far as a role-playing player.

Pick 14: NEW ORLEANS PELICANS – Jordan Hawkins: The UConn guard, National Champion, promises to be a three-point shooter in his profile in all situations. But the 21-year-old is still weak defensively.

Pick 13: TORONTO RAPTORS – Gradey Dick: One of the best shooters in the draft is crossing the border into Canada. Dick, who appears here with a red glittery blazer, fits Toronto because they need a shoot. But defensively there is still a lot of catching up to do. His comment: “A dream comes true!”

NBA Draft 2023 in the live ticker: Mavericks surprise with trade

Pick 12: DALLAS MAVERICKS – Dereck Lively II: It’s Duke’s center for Luka Doncic and Co. – as I said, officially drafted by the Thunder. Dallas is said to have been targeting Lively early in the draft – if that was the case, the trade and jump from 10 to 12 was more than worth it. The 19-year-old is 2.16m tall, an excellent shot blocker. But at his age also a bit narrow around the shoulders and not very good at ball handling.

The Mavericks have significantly more cap flexibility as a result of the trade. According to ESPN, they’re guaranteed at $86 million, but that might have to include Kyrie Irving and Reggie Bullock’s non-guaranteed contract. However, you now have the full midlevel exception and a $17 million trade exception available. That’s Bertans’ salary for the coming season.

UPDATE According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Mavs are scrambling to trade their $17M Trade Exception for a player and a draft pick.

Pick 11: ORLANDO MAGIC – Jett Howard: 19 years after his father Juwan Howard, Jett from Michigan is also drafted into the NBA. He was coached there by his father. Howard is a good athlete and a good scorer.

Pick 10: OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER – Cason Wallace: Actually the Mavs’ pick, but rumor has it on social media that they picked Wallace for OKC. In exchange for Wallace and Davis Bertans’ contract, the Mavs slip two places and are now picking at 12. Wallace, Kentucky guard, is a good shot but a bit short. You can read about the strengths/weaknesses of the picks in our mock draft.

The Mavs are trading their pick!

Pick 9: UTAH JAZZ – Taylor Hendricks: UCF forward goes to Utah. A good athlete and marksman, but still quite wild. Then Adam Silver officially announces the Pacers and Wizards trade – and now there’s a trade for the Mavs too!

NBA Draft 2023 in the live ticker: Trade between Indiana and Washington

Pick 8: INDIANA PACERS – Jarace Walker: Officially, Walker goes to the Wizards and puts on the right cap, but behind the scenes the trade is apparently already a done deal. The forward can act as a playmaker and play bigger too, but he still needs to work on his shoot.

And there is already the compensation for the Pacers: According to Woj, they will get two future second-round picks for their exchange from the seventh to the eighth pick.

Pick 7: WASHINGTON WIZARDS – Bilal Coulibaly: Wow! The Indiana Pacers were actually number 7, and they choose Wembanyama’s teammate Coulibaly from France – and then, according to Adrian Wojnarowski, the pick goes straight to the Wizards! “The Pacers are trading back a spot and have picked Coulibaly for the Wizards.” What the Pacers get for it is still unclear. Coulibaly is a super talented forward, but still extremely raw at 18.

We have a trade!

Pick 6: ORLANDO MAGIC – Anthony Black: The first little surprise? The Magic are young and on the rise. “You get a great person, a leader and a winner, he’ll make everyone around him better,” praised Black’s mother after the pick, although she is not entirely impartial. Black is a great playmaker and good defender, but the throw is still wobbly.

Pick 5: DETROIT PISTONS – Ausar Thompson: And that’s where the second brother goes off the board. Ausar isn’t as good a shooter as his brother, but has the makings of a versatile lockdown defender. “It feels good to be making history with Amen. I look forward to meeting and growing with my teammates and my coaches.”

Pick 4: HOUSTON ROCKETS – Amen Thompson: The first of the Thompson twins goes to Houston – is his brother coming right after? After Wemby, his potential doesn’t have to hide from anyone: “I’m happy to be a Rocket! We’re a young team, we’ll play fast. How is it celebrated now? In-N-Out-Burger you should be here in New York now fly in!”

NBA Draft 2023 in the live ticker: Miller ahead of Henderson in the top 3

Pick 3: PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS – Scoot Henderson: Again, no surprise, Henderson is heading to Oregon. So the pick wasn’t traded – now the question is how to proceed with franchise star Damian Lillard.

Pick 2: CHARLOTTE HORNETS – Brandon Miller: The favorite prevails, Miller goes off the board before Scoot Henderson. The forward, with his elite shooter skills, was too promising a prospect for Michael Jordan. Miller will now team up with LaMelo Ball. “Melo will be my big brother away from home,” Miller said.

Why Miller is a controversial pick? The 20-year-old is said to have been involved in a shooting in Alabama that killed a 23-year-old. He was accused by Tuscaloosa police of passing on the murder weapon. However, there was no arrest or indictment, Miller rejects the allegations.

Pick 1: SAN ANTONIO SPURS – Victor Wembanyama: It comes as it had to come! The Spurs choose Wemby, the cheering in the hall is big! Coaching legend Gregg Popovich is allowed to shape this super talent at Spurs. Wemby gives a few hugs on the way onto the stage, then slips on his new Spurs cap and greets Adam Silver. A new era in the NBA may have just begun!

It is Spurs’ third number one pick after David Robinson and Tim Duncan. Here is the detailed news about the Wembanyama pick!

The draft begins: Commissioner Adam Silver is on the stage. It’s starting! Silver reviews the season and congratulates the Denver Nuggets on winning the title. He points out that Nikola Jokic was drafted in the 2nd round. “Let’s get the night started! The first pick in the 2023 draft belongs to the San Antonio Spurs. They have five minutes for their pick.”

Scoot Henderson

NBA Draft 2023 in the live ticker – before the start: Scoot or Miller in second place?

Before we start: After a camera pan over the new draft class, it’s safe to say: We’re going to see some pretty… “colorful” clothes today!

Gradey Dick

Before Begin: The pre-draft show is on. Adrian Wojnarowski emphasizes that according to his information, Brandon Miller is still ahead of Scoot. We will see!

Before beginning: A little more information from Shams: The New Orleans Pelicans are said to have had a meeting with Scoot Henderson in the last few days. New Orleans have tried to get a top 3 pick, but – so far! – the Pelicans and Trail Blazers had no interest in trading their pick.

Before starting: A trade that hasn’t happened (yet): Paul George to the Knicks. It should according to SNY Discussions between the Knicks andd gave to the Clippers. In the end, however, nothing came of it: In the Big Apple, people are said to have been afraid that the 33-year-old would ask for a max extension over 4 years and almost 22 million dollars. PG has one year left on his contract ($45.6m salary) and has a $48m player option for 2024/25.

Before starting: Incidentally, Scoot Henderson has meanwhile jumped ahead of Brandon Miller at some betting providers. This also has to do with a tweet from Shams Charania a few hours ago. However, a final decision has not yet been made. Here’s our first round mock draft again.

Before starting: This is not directly related to the draft, but the Wizards not only deal everything that is not in the trees by three, but have also found an investor: around 5 percent of the shares of Monumental Sports & Entertainment. the parent company of the Wizards, Mystics (WNBA) and Capitals (NHL) are now owned by Qatar’s Sovereign Wealth Fund. This is the first time a foreign country has bought into an American team.

Before starting: According to Woj, the trade from the Phoenix Suns for Bradley Beal has now been finalized. The Wizards get draft material:

Six second-round picks (2024-2028 and 2030) Four pick swaps from first-round picks: 2024, 2026, 2028 and 2030

The Suns are also sending cash to Washington. Yes, Mat Ishbia has it.

NBA Draft 2023 in the live ticker: Jordan Poole traded to Washington

Before the start: More information about the Poole trade: The first round pick that Die Dubs hand over to Washington is that of 2030 – and according to ESPN Top 20 protected.

Before beginning: Completely surprisingly, the Wizards once again provide news. Chris Paul, just out of Phoenix in the Bradley-Beal package, is apparently going to the Golden State Warriors. In return, Jordan Poole should come.

Before starting: The Lakers and the Pacers changed the order a bit. For Pick 47 and Cash, LA received Pick #40 from Indiana. So the Lakers are on positions 17 and 40, the Pacers even four times: 7, 26, 47 and 55.

Before starting: The big question will be who Charlotte will choose for second place. Adrian Wojnarowski (ESPN) assumes that it will be Brandon Miller and not Scoot Henderson. Incidentally, the decision will be made by Michael Jordan, who will give up control of the team on July 1st.

Before beginning: Would you like more reading material? How about our first-round mock draft, where we briefly introduce each player?

Before starting: What actually makes this Wembanyama special? Here’s a look at whether the hype is justified. Spoiler alert: All doors are open to this boy.

Before starting: It will of course be Victor Wembanyama, who is considered the best prospect since LeBron James 20 years ago. By the way: This season there are not 60, but only 58 picks because both Chicago and Philadelphia broke the tampering rules.

Before the start: Welcome to our live ticker for the NBA Draft 2023. At 2 a.m. the San Antonio Spurs are the first team to turn, we already have a premonition of who the Spurs will draw…
