Adaptation of the book “Elvis and I”, “Priscilla” received a standing ovation after its preview screening at the Venice Film Festival. A film that could allow director Sofia Coppola to win the second Golden Lion of her career.

A story of emancipation. Eighth film of Sofia Coppola’s career, “Priscilla” received a standing ovation for more than 7 minutes after its screening at the Venice Film Festival. The film, adapted from the book “Elvis and I” by Priscilla Presley (who is also co-producer of the film) published in 1985, looks back on the meeting in 1959, in Germany, with the rock legend when she was only aged 14 years old at the time.

Despite their ten years of difference, and the reluctance of her parents, the young girl will develop a personal relationship with the musician who was doing his military service, to the point that the latter will insist on bringing her to Graceland in the summer of 1962. Their marriage will be celebrated in May 1967 before their separation five years later, followed by their divorce in 1973.

Obviously very moved at the end of the screening, Priscilla Presley took the opportunity to salute the staging work of Sofia Coppola. “It’s very difficult to sit down and watch a movie that’s about you, your life, your love. Sofia has done a wonderful job. She studied the story well, we spoke twice, and I tried to explain everything to her as clearly as possible”, she explained during the press conference organized before the screening.

“It was very difficult for my parents to understand that Elvis could be so interested in me, and why he was. And I think that’s because I was good at listening. Elvis confided completely in me in Germany: his fears, his hopes, the loss of his mother – which he never accepted. And I was the person who was there for him, to listen to him and comfort him. This was our connection. Even though I was 14, I had experience – not in numbers. People think, ‘Oh, that was for sex’. I never had a relationship with him (not before their marriage according to her). He was very sweet, kind, loving, and he respected the fact that I was only 14 years old,” she says.

After “The Bling Ring” in 2013, this is the second time that Sofia Coppola has teamed up with production company A24 for a film. It is Jacob Elordi who embodies Elvis on the screen, while actress Cailee Spaeny lends her features to Priscilla. The film is expected in French theaters on October 27.
