Last Sunday, the neighbor of a resident of rue des Cerisiers in Fléron found one of this resident’s cats, still alive, lying in the middle of the road in its vomit of blood, then which died a death violent.

“He vomited blood and more, then died in excruciating pain. It’s sad. It’s unfortunate,” says its owner.

“His name was Pilouche and he was three years old. I took him to the vet who thought he was poisoned by rat poison given his condition and the color of the blood, which had become increasingly black,” she admits. This resident still has two cats who are alive and well.

La Fléronnaise expressed her sadness on social networks, which sparked many comments. Some people wonder if a malicious person intentionally poisons cats or if someone wants to get rid of so-called harmful animals (rats, badgers, weasels, etc.) and applies rat poison, which also kills cats unintentionally.

Call for vigilance

Contacted by us, the mayor of Fléron, Thierry Ancion, was not informed of the situation. “We had badgers in the Fléron cemetery. It is a protected species and it is true that they cause significant damage. The DNF (Nature and Forests Department) of the Walloon Region now recommends no longer moving them but creating a micro-habitat for these badgers. This is what we did,” says Thierry Ancion.

Another cat was found dead, poisoned behind a van on rue des Cerisiers, a week earlier. “And there is a family of badgers that come out at night and cause damage to private homes,” adds Fléronnaise. “A rodent control campaign is planned in the commune but it will not begin until next Monday,” the mayor further specifies.

In the meantime, a call for vigilance is launched on social networks for cat owners in Fléron.
