The National Public Defender Miriam Lewin will give a talk in Bariloche to publicize a series of recommendations for the media treatment of indigenous peoples. It will be this Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the National Radio headquarters and the activity is open to the public.

He asserted that “there is a construction of a public enemy.” «We know that, in other historical contexts of crisis, the construction of an embodied threat in a sector of the population has very negative consequences. We were able to perceive that this was happening in Bariloche,” he said.
He insisted that in the Andean city there are a “fear” towards Mapuche identities and discredits them. “This had consequences. The violent events that occurred in Bariloche and El Bolsón and that targeted people from Mapuche communities cannot be isolated,” he said.
He stressed that the Public Defender’s Office has no sanctioning power and that “he is against any limitation to freedom of expression.” “But we saw that it was necessary to build, together with experts from the academy, people who had experience in the indigenous question and members of the communities, to prepare recommendations for the media regarding the approach to the indigenous question,” he added.
He pointed out that many times, native peoples are “folklorized” and, in general, they are not consulted as sources on issues that concern them directly.
«This Tuesday this decalogue will be presented, there will be space for questions and answers and some kind of debate. We do not like to personalize or accuse any particular medium. Many times, when a media outlet is the object of a claim for something that was said, we discovered that it is not ill will but ignorance“, he concluded.
