For some it’s a cult, for others it’s a joke. And it is not without controversy either. After all, “The Shoe of Manitu” makes full use of prejudices and clichés, for example about homosexuals. Director and actor Michael “Bully” Herbig himself also says that he would no longer shoot the film like this today.
Nevertheless, the film, which was released in cinemas in 2001, won numerous prizes – from Bambi to the Porcelain Lion of the Bavarian State Chancellery and the German Comedy to the German Film Prize (and here twice, in the category Special Jury Prize and Audience Prize). And with 12 million visitors, it is one of the most successful German cinema films ever produced.
