A man shot dead three people and himself at a Florida store. Apparently the attack was racially motivated. “He hated black people,” the sheriff says of the shooter. A swastika was painted on a murder weapon.

A white man shot and killed three people at a store in a black-majority neighborhood in Jacksonville, Florida. The crime was “racially motivated,” Sheriff TK Waters told reporters on Saturday (local time). “He hated black people,” he added, looking at the alleged shooter, who directed himself after the fact.

The suspect used a pistol and an assault rifle, and at least one of the weapons had a swastika painted on it, the sheriff said. Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan initially informed about the bloody deed in a Dollar General supermarket chain.

The attack happened on Saturday afternoon near Edward Water University, a traditional black college. The university was locked down; Students were asked to stay in their rooms.

Five years ago to the day, a man opened fire at a video game contest in Jacksonville, killing two people. He then turned the gun on himself. Sheriff Waters said the suspected shooter at the Dollar General store left notes that led investigators to believe he may have deliberately used the hate crime day to mark the fifth anniversary of the shooting deaths at that gaming event voted on August 26, 2018.

The suspected shooter, who was in his 20s, drove to the scene from neighboring Clay County, Waters said. Before that, he sent his father a text message asking him to turn on his computer. The father discovered the writings on the computer in which the son had apparently announced the crime. The family dialed 911, but the gun attack was already underway.

“I’m tired of all these gun attacks”

Mayor Deegan previously spoke of an “unacceptable” act in an interview with the television station WJXT. “One gun incident is too many, but these mass shootings are hard to stomach,” the mayor said. City Councilor Ju’Coby Pittman said after the first reports of the bloody deed: “My heart is heavy. I’m tired of all these gun attacks.”

The armed attack at a store in a predominantly black neighborhood brought back memories of previous hate crimes targeting black US citizens. In May 2022, a white youth killed ten people with racist motives in a supermarket in Buffalo, New York. In June 2015, a young white man killed nine people during a Bible study at an Episcopal church in Charleston, South Carolina, which was mostly attended by African Americans.
