It was walkers who saw something abnormal this Saturday morning on Knokke beach. As they approached the disturbing element, they noticed that it was a turtle which was unfortunately dead, as confirmed by the emergency services called to the scene. The carcass was already in an initial state of decomposition, add our colleagues from Laatste Nieuws.

But this turtle wasn’t just any turtle. It was a leatherback turtle, confirms Jan Haelters, of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. It is probably a female, measuring 1.73 meters and weighing 200 kilos. She was found not far from the Dutch border and is believed to have been dead for several days.
A small event in our country since it is only the third time that an individual of this species has washed up on the Belgian coast in 30 years. “It is exceptional that such a turtle washes up on our shores. In 28 years that I have been active, this is only the third time,” explains Jan Haelters.
