New York has implemented a new method to exterminate rats with almost 100% effectiveness, although this does not mean that the rodent problem in the city has been definitively resolved. The strategy consists of injecting carbon monoxide into their burrows, causing the rodents to suffocate, the New York Post reported.

According to exterminator Matt Deodato of Urban Pest Management, this methodology has been successful in completely eliminating 100 burrows on East 86th Street on the Upper East Side, and plans are already underway to apply it to new areas. Anyway, wiping out all the rats in the city will probably require a lot more than this.

Councilwoman Julie Menin, who represents the Big Apple’s 5th District, noted that the program achieved a “notable reduction” in the presence of rodents since its inception last winter on the Upper East Side.

“Deodato’s method demonstrated an impressive eradication rate of almost 100% in the tree holes where it was applied,” Menin’s office said in a statement.

For his part, biologist Jason Munshi-South of Fordham University told Business Insider that although this technique supervised by Deodato kills rodents in the selected burrows, it is a “limited strategy” that will lead to a “limited victory.” .

As he explained, if the problems of access to food, garbage and shelters for rats are not solved, they will return. Even if rats are wiped out in a burrow, other nearby rats will move there, or, if there are survivors, they may reproduce and repopulate these areas.

Both experts agreed that eliminating food sources and nesting spaces are essential to ensuring that rats do not return. However, they point out that the main challenge is the large amount of garbage that New York City generates, and the inability to prevent rodents from accessing it.

In that sense, they suggested that a municipal initiative to contain garbage, such as the implementation of large rat-resistant containers, could work. However, they also acknowledged that this idea could be very controversial.

Business Insider noted that a similar strategy was used in the past, using dry ice in Lower Manhattan parks that had hundreds of rat burrows. With the intensive and daily use of the element, and its supervision, it was possible to reduce the number of burrows to a few. However, according to Munshi-South, if the application of this tactic is stopped for a period of time, the following year the rats will reproduce again.

With a budget of USD 20,000 from the city’s cleanup initiative, New York has intensified its fight against these invaders in recent months. Mayor Eric Adams even named Kathleen Corradi as the city’s first “rat czarina” in April.
