“Record-breaking contraband seizures by Customs in 2022”

Seizures of contraband cigarettes exploded in 2022. According to data from the Administration of Customs and Indirect Taxes (ADII), some 19 million units of cigarettes were confiscated last year against 760,000 units a year earlier. The operations carried out by customs officers also led to the seizure of large quantities of tobacco products (more than 2 tonnes of ground tobacco and 524 kg of tobacco leaves) and 6,356 electronic cigarettes.

Regarding narcotics, Customs got their hands on 17 tons of cannabis against 39 tons in 2021, 1.2 tons of maĆ¢ssel against double in 2021, 2 million psychotropic tablets against 27,000 a year earlier. In addition to these seizures, 85.5 kg of hard drugs against 10 kg in 2021.
