LOS ANGELES – The number of detained migrants who entered the US without authorization last June plummeted to the lowest level since February 2021 with less than 100,000 foreigners processed, the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) said Tuesday. .
Last month, US border agents apprehended 99,545 migrants at the southwest border, which represents a 42% decrease from May 2023 when 169,244 foreigners were apprehended.
The interim CBP commissioner, Troy Miller, emphasized in a statement that the decrease is due to the implementation of the Biden government’s measures after the end of Title 42, on May 12, and the continued implementation of the immigration laws stipulated in Title 8.
“Our sustained efforts to enforce our authority under Title 8, combined with expanding access to pathways and legal process, have driven the number of migrant encounters along the Southwest border to their lowest levels in more than two years,” Miller said.
At the ports of entry, 45,062 migrants were processed in June, including those who had an appointment through the CBP One application, which allows them to obtain an opportunity to present their cases before the immigration authorities.
In total, 144,607 migrants were taken into the custody of immigration authorities in June at the southern border, including those seeking asylum admitted at a border port.
They represent a 30% decline from May 2023, and also remain the lowest since February 2021.
With the arrival of summer, Border Patrol agents have also seen their rescue efforts increase with nearly 1,700 migrants rescued, bringing the total number in fiscal year 2023 from 24,056 at the end of May to 25,735 at the end of June.
