560,000 Austrians have already activated their digital driving license, which has been available for over a year. Now the next step followed. In the future, the registration certificate can also be shown on the cell phone. This means that every traffic control can be carried out digitally, as every police officer in Austria has been equipped with a smartphone since 2017, as Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (VP) emphasized yesterday. The prerequisite is the new version of ID Austria including security functions and a vehicle registered in Austria. Several vehicles can also be saved; during traffic control, a QR code must be generated, which is then checked by the police officer. Internet access is not necessary for this.
However, anyone who borrows a car is currently still dependent on the registration certificate in paper form. But that should change soon. Florian Tursky (VP), State Secretary for Digitalization, said: “Austria is the only European country that works with this standard. All EU states must have followed suit by the end of 2025.”
